Organisations have a legal duty to put in place suitable arrangements to manage for health and safety.  Business leaders, owners, managers and supervisors all need to know how to keep people safe. This course will guide you through your legal obligations and introduce strategies to ensure your business is as healthy and as safe as possible. You will get an understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and learn the importance of understanding, promoting, and implementing effective health and safety practices.

Anyone who has responsibility for health and safety processes within their business including employers, business owners, managers, team leaders, supervisors, and those in human resource departments.

  • How to engage your workforce for effective hazard and risk assessments
  • Monitoring of workplace health related issues
  • Measuring safety performance
  • Understanding the "duty of care" principals, contractors and sub-contractors
  • Compliance with reporting obligations
  • How health and safety representatives, supervisors, team leaders, middle managers, senior managers contribute to positive health and safety outcomes
  • How different management styles and behaviours influence safety culture and outcomes.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Kristen Gawn
is a Registered Nurse with a Post Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety from Otago University and a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education. With over 25 years of experience in the Occupational Health and Safety field, she specializes in assessing physical demands at work and creating rehabilitation plans for injured or sick workers. Kristen has worked with various industries, including manufacturing, logging, construction, and engineering, providing health screenings and promoting total worker health. She founded her own business, KG Health & Fitness Ltd, in 2005, offering independent occupational health services. Additionally, she has consulted for Business South since 2007, providing H&S advisory and training to businesses of all sizes. Kristen is a member of the New Zealand Occupational Health Nurses Association (NZOHNA), Human Factors NZ (HFNZ), and the Australia New Zealand Society of Occupational Medicine (ANZSOM). She is passionate about ensuring workplaces implement effective health and safety practices for the well-being of their employees.
