Join us over breakfast overlooking the harbour at the Edgar Centre's Harbour View Lounge for: "New Zealand, Putin’s Ukraine Invasion, and Trump’s Peace Plan" - Professor Robert Patman It is time for New Zealand to stop deluding itself that it shares common values and interests with a second Trump administration. Unless something changes soon, it is clear President Trump envisages a Ukraine peace settlement on the terms of the Putin regime that invaded the country. For New Zealand, Trump’s Ukraine peace plan constitutes a clear and present danger. It sets a terrible precedent, and Wellington needs to have the self-confidence and political courage to publicly indicate it will not support any diplomatic deal that rewards Russia’s aggression.
Professor Robert Patman is one of the University of Otago’s Inaugural Sesquicentennial Distinguished Chairs and a specialist in international relations, and is our August Club Otago speaker. You'll have seen him on the news as he makes regular contributions to the national and global media on international issues. Robert is looking forward to questions and comments after his talk and with a topic like this, we suspect this will be an interesting discussion.
