A survey of small businesses revealed that 41% consider the financials to be the hardest part of running their business, and 19% admitted they put their financials into the ‘too hard’ basket. Accounting for non-accountants is designed specifically for those who need to read basic financial statements and improve their understanding of key accounting concepts. This online workshop will improve your financial understanding.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to read an Income Statement and Balance Sheet and understand the common classifications and groupings within them.

DESIGNED FOR
Small business owners, and anyone responsible for the accounts in an organisation (whether a for-profit or a not-for-profit organisation). That is, anyone who needs to read basic financial statements and improve their understanding of key accounting concepts.

LEARNING CONTENT
Through practical examples and exercises you will learn:
  • What double-entry accounting means
  • The key elements of an Income Statement
  • The important features of a Balance Sheet
  • The purpose of depreciation

LEARNING OUTCOMES
After this course you will be able to:
  • Understand the key groupings for your expenses, assets, and liabilities
  • Understand the jargon used by accountants
  • Read your own financial statements

DURATION & FORMAT
A 3-hour course, facilitated online.

This will be a mix of short teaching videos participants can watch in their own time (2 x 15 minutes) and over 2 hours of live online teaching.
This is done to provide some variety, rather than just online teaching. Each topic begins with easy examples and builds towards the more complex, as participants are guided through financial statements, their classifications and groupings, and other related issues.

Geof Franks, Chartered Accountant.

Geof is a Chartered Accountant with a background as both a secondary and tertiary teacher. He established and managed a business school in the polytechnic sector and has held a senior management position in Wellington with the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Geof now specialises in training, offering a variety of practical accounting and business workshops. He is also a training facilitator and examiner for Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

Over the past twenty years, thousands of small business attendees have benefited from Geof's down-to-earth courses on accounting and business. His approach is hands-on and practical, and in simple terms, he will demystify previously difficult accounting and business concepts.

Small businesses may qualify for vouchers to help pay for services such as training workshops, courses and coaching that build the management capabilities of their owners, operators and key managers. Vouchers may be provided to a business where the Growth Advisors have identified a need for management training as part of an action plan to support the business owner to grow and innovate their business.
