Seminar 1 Maximising Older Worker Participation
9.30am – 10.30am

The shape of New Zealand’s workforce is changing. Today one in three workers are aged 50 and over.  The number of older workers and the percentage staying on in work well into their late 60s and 70s is going to increase over the next 20 years. This brings both challenges and opportunities for employers and employees.

In this seminar active researchers in the field of age and work will share practical insights from recent research undertaken in Aotearoa New Zealand. They will discuss how the attitudes and motivations of older workers have changed, the challenges of working and care and how employers are adapting.

Keynote Speakers
  • Prof Fiona Alpass: Co-director HART Maximising Older Worker Participation in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Dr Joanne Allen:   Attitudes and Motivations of Older Workers Across Time
  • Assoc Prof Mary Breheny:  Reconciling Work and Care
  • Assoc Prof Judith Davey:  Employer Needs and Practices

Seminar 2: Senior Entrepreneurship in Aotearoa New Zealand
11.00am – 12.00pm

Entrepreneurship is often thought of as something younger people and serial entrepreneurs engage in. Globally increasing numbers of people are starting businesses for the first time after the age of fifty. This is also happening in New Zealand. In this seminar we will share with you some key insights from a comprehensive study undertaken into senior entrepreneurship in New Zealand.

We will look at why people start a business for the first time later in life, the types of businesses they start, their learning and support needs as well the types of advice they need and where they get it from.  We will also introduce you to a self-assessment tool and resources that have been developed specifically for New Zealand.

Keynote Speakers
  • Judith Davey:  Why people start businesses later in life
  • Chris Kirk: The learning and support needs of emerging senior entrepreneurs
  • Geoff Pearman:  Where people get their advice and recommendations from the research
